Local Game-Changers To Keep An Eye On

These local game-changers are a talented bunch, and these game changers didn’t come to play.

Areeba Baker Davids
A vibrant, optimistic personality with a knack for make-up and beauty content, Areeba has been in the social media game for over seven years, amassing an audience of 31K on Instagram and more than 1.7K on YouTube. The modest blogger has even dived into blogging about updating her home and cooking, and has a mash-up of beauty and lifestyle content. She recently did a national campaign shoot with Canal Walk – sis is going places!

Aneeqah fataar
You might have seen Aneeqah effortlessly showing off local brands, make-up looks, or even taking us on her journey to a spa or for cupping therapy. Aneeqah is definitely playing hardball in the influencer game, and currently has a steady following of over 36K followers on Instagram. She also works as a social media marketer while doing her BCom degree, and  was spotted serving lewks at the 2022 Sun Met gala!

Hanna
Where would South Africans be without our love for music? For Zimbabwean-born rapper Hanna, her music journey started with uploading rap videos and covers on her social media. She has gone on to gain the attention of other artists such as Nasty C and Tellaman, and has released some insane beats in the past few years. She’s also done live performances, collaborated with other up-and-coming artists, such as DeekayDidIt and Luna Florentino, and continues to be
a boundary-pusher.

Joshua  Rubin
Joshua is known for delving into some controversialsubjects that he calls ‘edgy’. Gaining lots of popularity during the first COVID-19 lockdown for documenting the empty streets of the city, Joshua dabbles in all things video and photography. From making hilarious skits with regular star Caroline, speaking to ex-gang members on his podcast, to documenting intimate shots of the people and places in South Africa, Joshua is exactly as his username suggests – wide awake.

Ameer Hendricks
When the term ‘all-rounder’ is used, Ameer Hendricks immediately comes to mind. A law student, sneaker business owner, musician and four-time South African Goju Kai champion, it’s clear that Ameer is willing to try anything. If he’s not swinging punches at the bag, he’s creating tracks in the studio. Having charted on the Chicago Top 40, he’s inspired by local artists such as Jimmy Nevis, YoungstaCPT and Ameen Harron, and wants his music to be a sweet escape for his listeners. Only in his early 20s, we’re excited to see (and hear) what Ameer has coming up.

Neevan Ferris
Hailing from the Northern Cape, this psychology student has made some moves, both the dancing and career kind. What started out as a TikTok skit to pass the time during lockdown has now turned into a following of 1M+ on the app. Given her fame, it’s no surprise that she’s also in demand as an influencer and as a guest on radio shows and at events. But she is best known for her amapiano dances, trying new dance trends, and just vibing on her social media.

Richard  Bothma
We all need a little peace, and that is exactly the vibe Richard’s oil paintings evoke. Though his paintings stick to an impressionist style, every brushstroke brings life. His scenes are typically of aesthetic South African landscapes and nature; from humble sunsets to rolling seascapes. His paintings come in all sizes – from canvases that will fit in your palm to ones that fill an entire wall. If you haven’t had your jaw dropped in a while, have a look at Richard’s artworks in Zulu Lulu Art House (KZN) or Fine Art Portfolio (Cape Town and Franschhoek) in person.
