Celebs making a difference

These celebs are making it easier for all of us to be just as dope as they are.

We’ve seen some celebrities do amazing things, whether it be for the environment, animals or humanity. With financial assistance, direct actions, creating a line to inspire others, or, in some cases, all of the above, these celebs are putting their status and platforms to good use.

Gigi Hadid

Young, beautiful, and one of the world’s most sought-after models, there’s not much that Gigi doesn’t seem to have going for her, right? But she’s not just another pretty face. This 25-year-old is also a designer, and in 2017 she announced that she would be doing a collaboration with Vogue Eyewear. Yes, Vogue! Her capsule collection meant that fans could now channel the fierce runway star as they strutted their stuff in their local streets. But it wasn’t Gigi’s first rodeo. She partnered with Tommy Hilfiger in 2016 and collaborated on a line called Tommy x Gigi, which, unsurprisingly, sold out before the runway show had ended. February 2018 brought us the final collection of the collab, and Gigi couldn’t have been more pleased with the outcome. ‘I wanted it to be something that, when people look at it, they know I was the one who designed it, and that it’s something I would genuinely wear,’ she explains. We know this is true because Gigi can often be seen sporting Tommy x Gigi in the streets. Beauty and creative talent, Gigi’s on top of the world and sitting pretty.

Rihanna

Fenty Beauty by Rihanna was launched in September 2017, and has continuously been reaching new heights ever since. Instead of darker-skinned women having to pick between different foundations named after nuts and spices (really?), and not finding make-up to match their skin tones, and lighter-skinned ladies having to choose between nudes that all come in varying shades, RiRi simply numbered her foundations. No muss, no fuss, and we love it! Women in the US got the right to vote in 1920, but it’s taken almost 100 years for the beauty field to recognise that Harlot Red looks different on various skin tones. After years of using the best of the best that the industry has to offer, Rihanna says: ‘I was still seeing a void in the industry for products that performed across all skin types and -tones.’ Fenty acknowledges that make-up can be a weapon of choice for self-expression and it strives for inclusivity. In this day and age, that’s a mission statement we can get behind. And the fact that it leaves us looking bomb is a double win.

Jaden Smith

In the pursuit of happiness, Jaden Smith has taken a step back from acting and put his fashion foot forward. In 2015, he launched MSFTSrep, a clothing line that soon became a lifestyle brand, with many projects in the works. Riding on the coat-tails of his famous mom and dad was clearly no longer enough for the young and stylish entrepreneur. He is branching out into the global space. In 2015, he started JUST Water, a business venture in which he bottles natural spring water that is, according to the website, ‘responsibly sourced, produced and packaged for improved environmental and community impact’. It’s bottled in paper and plant-based plastic. When it comes to Jaden, he’s no longer looking for fame, but at the bigger picture.
