The Skin Enthusiast: Aphiwe Khambule

Aphiwe Khambule, the skin enthusiast, is as vibrant and lovely as her Instagram feed lets on. Having always been creative, a lover of writing and interested in the media world, Aphiwe pursued media studies at Rhodes University. She went on to work as a beauty editor for Cosmopolitan South Africa and Good Housekeeping for a number of years before deciding to freelance. Here, she learned many things about herself, her passions and career. One of her biggest passions being skincare; reviewing and giving advice about skincare to her followers.

Dubbed a skincare enthusiast, where does your love for skincare stem from?

I’ve always loved skincare: I grew up in a household where skincare was an important element in a beauty routine. However, during my time at Cosmopolitan I fell even more in love with skincare. I had the privilege of engaging and learning from skincare professionals and attending skincare seminars, which helped me understand skin better and gave more insight on skincare overall. As a result, it inspired me to help others so that they can have a better skincare routine to keep their skin healthy.

You’re like the big sister to many young beauty enthusiasts. What is your favourite thing about skincare and beauty products?

Oh my gosh! I’m honoured that someone out there sees me in that manner. I’m humbled, and I love being a big sister (since I am one). My favourite thing about skincare and beauty is that it’s such an act of kindness for your skin. By spending a few minutes taking care of your skin, you’re reminding yourself that taking care of yourself matters – it can also boost your mood. I especially love how skincare can help increase [your] confidence and help you feel good. Also, it’s such a relaxing and calming addition to one’s day!

What are your favourite things about your everyday life?

It is ever-changing. I am exposed to new challenges and experiences every day. Each day is never the same. With travel, I love learning about different cultures and being able to see different parts of the world. In my career, I love the flexibility of it and being in charge of myself, which takes a lot of self-discipline. My favourite thing about skincare is how relaxing it can be and how good I feel after doing my skincare routine.

How do you stay motivated and enthusiastic about any of your personal or career ventures?

It is important for me to always visualise my goals to help me stay focused. Thinking about my goals every day and imagining
life after achieving my goals helps keep me motivated. I will also ‘speak’ my goals and dreams to myself daily to maintain my motivation and enthusiasm. Even when I have a setback, I encourage myself and use those setbacks as learning opportunities
on how I can do better. I also celebrate every win even if I haven’t achieved the goal because it encourages me to keep going
and to not lose energy towards achieving my BIG goal. My Christian faith also plays a big role in helping me maintain motivation in my life.
