Awesome Hard-To-Reach Hotspots

The journey to these fabulous hard-to-reach hotspots might frustrate or frighten you, but we dare say the extra slog will be worth the effort taken to get there

1. Sani Mountain Escape | Lesotho
You can call the Sani Pass beautiful, a must-see, an epic drive and an incredible adventure … and yes, it is all of that and more. It’s also kind
of a slog, and when you’re halfway up the various switchbacks, hairpin bends and single tracks, and a taxi is barrelling down the pass at what feels like breakneck speed, you might wish you chose a more accessible adventure. But drinking a beer at the highest pub in Africa makes it all worth it. Also, spending time at 2 874 metres above sea level certainly puts your daily grind into perspective. This world-famous lodge and backpacker haven, cited atop southern Africa’s highest mountain range, overlooking the Kingdom of Lesotho’s soul-stirring Maluti peaks and valleys, places you centre stage in one of the world’s most majestic geographical amphitheatres. And if that isn’t worth the effort, what is?

2. Elandsberg Wilderness Camp | Tankwa Karoo National Park, Northern Cape
The arid Tankwa Karoo isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but this camp is a little oasis, albeit one where you’ll have to adjust your comfort levels. It will take almost forever to get there from any of our major cities, and you will have to make space in the boot (of your car with high clearance) to take all the food and drinks you’ll need. Everything will also be well shaken after the sinkplaat road you’ll drive to the park. And if you like load shedding, you’ll love the paraffin lamps and candles, two-plate gas stove and solar-powered fridge. Rough, hey? But the views over the Karoo plains and the imposing Roggeveld escarpment will make you forget about it all. This is where you go to switch off and recharge.

3. Bulungula Lodge | Wild Coast, Eastern Cape
If you’re looking for paradise, it’s situated on the Wild Coast, and this down-to-earth lodge is as much part of the community as its residents are part of the lodge. No fences, no us-and-them, just a beautiful multicultural holiday. The lodge sustains local culture and is owned and managed by the people of Nqileni village. You can choose between a traditional Xhosa rondavel, a private room, backpacker dormitories, the campground, or their newly constructed forest cabins. The lodge is carbon neutral and powered by solar energy, and you’ll love their legendary ‘rocket’ hot-water showers as well as the most colourful compost toilets in Africa. It’s quite a drive from the nearest big towns and you’ll have to do all your shopping before you go. They have a spaza shop with limited goods, but you can buy rolling papers and dop at the well-stocked bar –  plus the food is wonderful, so there’s really no need to bring your own (although there is a kitchen, should you wish to). Aside from a seemingly endless pristine, unspoiled sandy beach on your door- step, there’s the river to explore, and all kinds of ways of getting to understand local culture better  by joining a number of immersive activities.

4. Eagle Chalet at Cederberg Chalets | Western Cape
The owners claim that you won’t find a comparison to the Cederberg’s sheer pristine wilderness anywhere else on earth, and we tend to agree. But if you want to capture the true spirit of the Cederberg, you have to be willing to forego some luxuries. This starts with forgetting about a smooth journey – the road is bumpy, and you’ll need a vehicle with high clearance to reach your chalet. These offer a comfortable stay, providing everything you may need but no excessive luxuries. You must bring your bedding, pillows, towels, firewood, and other sundries. You are guaranteed ample fresh air, hiking and mountain biking trails, the ultimate views for sundowners and no distractions while immersing yourself in the beauty of the breathtaking Cederberg.

5. Stone Mountain Lodge | Kleinrivier, Western Cape
We’ll let you in on a secret: If you’re not up for the hiking challenge, Kleinrivier can send a vehicle to help six guests ascend the steep mountain. But where’s the fun in that? Incredible 360-degree views can only be gained if you’re up for the challenge and at Kleinrivier, you have to hike the steep Two Gorges Hiking Trail to get to their stunning lodge. The walk takes four to five hours in each direction, and a slackpacking option is available. The lodge has spectacular views over the Karoo and surrounding mountain range. You can spend your days exploring the trails that lead you through picturesque gorges dotted with ancient cycads, swim in icy mountain pools or relax on the luxurious couch in front of a roaring log fire.
