Self-care on a budget

You don’t need to spend hundreds of rands on gym contracts and fancy cosmetics to practise self-care

1. Read more

It’s important to step away from yourself and your life for a small period each day. Books are expensive, but library cards are free, and you can get e-books on your phone if you don’t have regular transport to get to a library. Otherwise, if you have access to the internet, fictional podcasts are a great way to escape.

2. Spend some time in the sun

Put on some sunscreen and a hat and spend a short amount of time in the sun. You can read outside, have lunch, or spend some time with the kids or your pets. Aside from getting vitamin D, spending time in the sun has been proven to boost our mood.

3. Stretch and breathe

By now, we all know the effects of sitting. To alleviate the negative effects of a sedentary office lifestyle, make sure you stretch your back, hamstrings and glutes, wrists and ankles. Find a good stretch for each and make sure you do these stretches multiple times a day, breathing in when you’re relaxed and exhaling during the difficult part of the stretch.
